An aluminum pergola with roof blades that rotate: open for breeze and light, closed for shade or rain.

What is a louvered pergola?

A louvered pergola is an aluminum shade structure whose roof is a row of blades (louvers) that rotate from open to closed, by hand crank or motor. It is also sold as an adjustable pergola, a bioclimatic pergola, a louvered roof or an operable (opening) roof, and called a louvered patio cover when it attaches to the house. Closed, the blades shed rain into gutters built into the frame; open, they let light and breeze through.

What louvered pergola installation includes

  • Powder-coated aluminum frame, posts and beams
  • Rotating roof louvers, by hand crank or motor
  • Gutters built into the frame that drain rain down the posts
  • Footings or anchors for the posts

Permits, electrical work and add-ons are usually quoted separately; see the terms below. Scope varies by installer, so check the written quote.

Louvered pergolas: questions homeowners ask

How much does a louvered pergola cost in Phoenix?

Typical installed range: $12,000–$34,000 for a 12×12 system, depending on the brand; $32,000–$55,000 for a 14×20 with fans, lights and heaters. The installer confirms the price in writing after measuring your space.

Does a louvered pergola keep out rain?

With the blades closed, most systems shed rain into gutters built into the frame, which drain down the posts. Ask for the system’s drainage capacity and wind rating in writing with the quote.

Manual or motorized louvers: which should I choose?

Manual louvers turn with a hand crank and cost less. Motorized louvers run from a remote or phone app, and many can add rain and wind sensors that move the blades automatically. Motors need an electrical circuit, which is quoted separately.

Do I need a permit for a louvered pergola?

It depends on your city, the size of the structure, whether it attaches to the house, and whether it includes electrical work. The installer confirms the rules for your address and handles the submittal if one is needed. Each city page on this site summarizes its local rules.
