How the estimate works

The calculator multiplies your area by the published installed rate for each structure. Patio cover rates are Phoenix installers’ starting prices, so it shows a “from” figure; the others are national installed ranges. Estimates leave out permits, electrical work and add-ons, which are usually quoted separately.

Permits at a glance

In Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa and Gilbert, a detached, unwired structure under 200 square feet can usually skip the building permit (Scottsdale still requires plan approval). Chandler requires a permit for any open-air ramada, and wiring needs a permit everywhere. See the permit guide.

Bar chart of pergola sizes by area: 10×10 is 100 sq ft, 10×12 is 120, 12×12 is 144, 12×16 is 192 and 14×14 is 196, all under the 200 sq ft line; 12×17 at 204, 14×20 at 280 and 20×20 at 400 are over it and need a building permit. Chandler requires a permit for any open-air ramada, and wiring needs a permit at any size.
Sizes up to 14×14 (196 sq ft) stay under the Valley’s usual 200 sq ft line for detached, unwired structures; Chandler and any wiring are the exceptions.
