How to maintain a louvered pergola in Arizona
Rinse the frame and blades with a garden hose, wash off grime with mild dish soap, and keep the gutters and downspouts clear, especially before monsoon season. Skip pressure washers and harsh cleaners, which can damage the powder coat and seals. Manufacturers call their systems low-maintenance; the work is mostly dust.
In the Phoenix metro: louvered pergolas from about $12,000, with a written quote before any work. Installation is done by a licensed Arizona contractor. Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler. Call (602) 557-3625
Louvered pergola cleaning schedule
| Part | How | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Frame and posts | Soft sponge and mild soap, then rinse | Every 2–3 months |
| Louvers | Hose lightly or wipe with a damp cloth | Every 3 months |
| Gutters and post drains | Flush with water to clear debris | Every 3–4 months |
| Rubber seals | Soapy water; check for cracks | Twice a year |
| Motor, transformer and cables | Check for dust and moisture | Every 6 months |
Schedule from Hansø’s published care guide; other makers suggest a full clean twice a year. Follow your own system’s manual first.
Arizona-specific care: dust and monsoon season
- Rinse the blades and frame after a dust storm, before the dust bakes on.
- Clear the gutters and downspouts before monsoon season starts on June 15, and check them after big storms; run a hose over them to confirm water flows.
- Follow the maker’s wind guidance. StruXure tells owners to keep the louvers open during strong wind.
- Open the blades after rain so debris and water don’t sit on them.
- Clean off bird droppings and tree sap promptly; they can damage the coating.
What to avoid when cleaning a pergola
- Pressure washers, or high pressure near blade ends, seals and motors; some makers allow low pressure, others advise against it entirely.
- Bleach, ammonia, acetone and other harsh or acidic cleaners, which can strip the powder coat.
- Scouring pads, steel wool and hard brushes.
- Forcing motorized louvers by hand; use the remote or app.

How long does a louvered pergola last?
Powder-coated aluminum systems are built to last for decades with little upkeep; one StruXure dealer quotes 20–30 or more years. The finish holds its color for about a decade in Arizona sun, according to a Phoenix installer. Motors, sensors and seals wear faster than the frame, so ask for the structure, finish, motor and workmanship warranties separately, and keep the care records the maker asks for.
